VE Day Celebration

Towns across the UK are invited to come together on the 8th May to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Below are the activities we have arranged to take place in Kingswood.

9:00 – The VE Day flag will be raised outside of the Civic Centre.

14:00-16:00 – An afternoon tea with music for older residents of Kingswood to come together, celebrate and remember. This event is currently fully booked but if you’d like to go on the waitlist, please contact [email protected]

18:30-21:30 – VE Day 80th anniversary celebration in Kingswood. We will be having live music in Kingswood park from 18:30 onwards by local bands and performers. At 21:30 a lantern of peace will be lit and a hymn will be sung. This will happen at the same time in every location to honour the date. Bring along your dinner and come together with your community.

Did you know.. People are encouraged to eat fish and chips on this day because fish and chips were one of the few things that weren’t rationed during WW2 to keep the factories working and to keep up morale during extremely worrying times. The availability of fish and chips, even during a time of scarcity, became a symbol of British resilience and a reminder of simpler times.
